In the name of Allah most gracious most merciful.

Rights of a Muslim upon a Muslim

Writen by: Sk. Omar Kadrawi

Translated by: Dr. Faheem Bukhatwa

16 Jumada Al-Aula 1431

30 April 2010

One of the greater intentions of Islamic law, and in order to fulfil Islamic aims is to unify the hearts, and unify the groups and unify their word, and fix the fracture between them, and eliminate causes of disputes and conspiracy and disagreements between them. Showing his grace on to this nation Allah says: {if you spent all what is in earth in order to unify their hearts you wouldn’t have been able to do so, but Allah did, He is the most honourable the most wise} 8-63. Praise be Him who unified all those hearts and praise to Him alone who unified all those races, and praise be to Him who unified all those colours, tongs and costumes.

Allah brought together the Ethupian Bilal and the Roman Suhaib, and Persian Salman and the Arabian Ali in unity and love and a brotherly tie never been precedented throughout history. Allah has commanded when he says: {And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allâh (i.e. this Qur'ân), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allâh's Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islâmic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allâh makes His signs and miracles clear to you, that you may be guided} 3:103. The messenger ppbu said: {A Muslim is a brother to the Muslim, he does not wrong him, he does not let him down. And whoever is out looking after some need of his brother then Allah is looking after his need, and this who goes out to solve a problem for a Muslim Allah in return for that shall solve one of his problems on the day of resurrection, and this who covers up for a Msulim Allah shall cover up for him on the day of resurrection}.

The messenger ppbu also said: {Every good deed done by people has a reward. For every day the sun rises: if practice justice between two there is a reward, and to help a man to mount on to his ride, or help load his belongings carries reward, and good word spoken carries a reward, and each step walked towards doing a prayer carries a reward,  and removing harm off the road carries a reward}.

The messenger ppbu also said: {You shall not enter paradise unless you have faith, and you shall not have faith until you love one another. Shall I guide you on to something if you do it then you shall love one another? Spread the word of peace between you}. Spreading peace means to practice humbleness and humility with the slaves of Allah, and love them and being peaceful towards them, and not holding ill feelings and intentions towards them. If people ignore this great practice or ritual, for example if one passes others and does not great them with peace then resentment and hatred will spread and hostilities are escalated. Hatred, despise and envy will spread amongst people. This is for certain the breakdown amongst society warned against by the messenger ppbu when he said: {Be warned against letting things go bad between you, that is the shaving eraser. I don’t mean the eraser of hair but the eraser of faith}.

Dear Muslim slave of Allah, you must take hatred and enmity and envy and ill feelings towards all Muslims out of your heart. When you put your head to sleep at night Ask Almighty Allah to tear away from you hearts all forms of cheating, hate and envy.

The messenger ppbu once sitting with his companions said: “There shall come up to you now a man who is one of the people of heavens”. So, shortly a man who was a native inhabitant of Madinah who was after doing his wothoo wash with the water was still dripping off his beard, with his shows hanging off his left. The following day the messenger ppbu said the same thing and the same man appeared. When they left, Abdullah Ebn Amro Ebn Al-As followed that man and said to him: I had a disagreement with my father and I swore I will not go home for three nights. Would you take me in with you so I would not fail my oath? And the man agreed. Amr spent three nights watching the man to find out what extra deed he does that makes him one of the people of paradise. He did not see the man stay up the night for prayers. Except each time he turned in his sleep he mentioned the name of glorified Allah. When he got up of Fajr prayer, he saw him making wothoo. When the three nights were up Amr thought very little of what the man’s deeds, Amr said: “Hey Abdul-Allah, the truth is that there was no disagreement with my father. But, I heard the messenger ppbu at three different occasions saying a man of the inhabitants of paradise would appear and you always appeared in those three times. I wanted to see what is it you do that earned you that place, and I saw you doing nothing extra ordinary. What is it that got you the status for the messenger ppbu to say that about you?” The man said: “That is it, all you saw is what is there, except that I make sure before I go to sleep each night that I have no hatred in my heart to any one of the Muslims and I hold no envy for something good Allah has given him”. Amr said: “So, this is that go you that status, is the very one we can not stand to do”. Take lessons from this story, that purity of the heart towards other Muslim brothers can elevate an individual to such a high status. Allah has guaranteed him paradise when he was still on this earth because he goes asleep after clearing his heart from all cheat, envy, enmity and hatred towards anyone. This is not an easy thing to do.

There are of us who would donate for charity, and would stay up the night in prayers and fasts the days, but would hurt his neighbour, and would backbite his brothers in their backs and slanders them and ill talk of their honor. Hatred, disputes, enmity, hostility and despise has spread between people and relations break down between Muslims. We see more of that between those who enter into business partnership deals who do not stick to the Islamic guidelines and limits of transactions and business and finance.

The honourable messenger ppbu said: {A Muslim is a brother to another Muslim, he does not wrong him, and does not let him down and down and does not look down at him. And the real piety and God fearing is right here (pointing towards chest). It is enough evil for a person to belittle or lookdown on to his Muslim brother. The entire Muslim is forbidden to another Muslim, his blood, his money and his honour}. Yes, these are the rights of each Muslim from all other Muslims. And they are magnificent rights, and brilliant guidance, where a Muslim would not wrong his brother Muslim, and would not let him down; such as not to give him help when needed or support him and defend him when one is in a position to do so. And never to lookdown upon another Muslim means not to ridicule him or belittle him for this is not an Islamic moral.

Slaves of Allah fear Allah. Avoid and be careful of any which may cause harm or hurt to other Muslims such as backbiting, slander, betraying their honor, and making fun of forbidden matters. Let those who do that know that they are raging a war against Allah the Almighty, because they are knocking down this Godly everlasting message. Fear Allah for your self, and for your ending state. And remember that this nation of ours is a one nation. And you who would attack the sanctity of other Muslims, let it be known to you that Allah will for sure take revenge and will impose justice and compensation. Allah shall take away from you good points and will be placed into the scales of those you backbit, those you wronged, and those you cursed. And even if your good deeds and points are finished, Allah will take their sins and off loads them on to your side of the scale, until you are dumped into hell fire. Allah says: {Allah will defend those who have faith. Allah does not love every betrayer treacherous and denier deceitful} 22:38

Dear brothers, we all can see the breakdown in our families and society when we broke our blood ties and contacts. Some hate their blood relatives and they plot and conspire against them, and back bite them with other relatives and those close to him. They start the flames of treachery and hater between relatives. For that reason you would find the hearts have hardened, and they eyes have dried off their tears, and you’d find toughness instead of kindness and mercy, and lack of compassion and emotions between the children within the same home and the same family. Even between the same brothers and sisters even when they have the same mother and father. Because of that blessing disappears and the sustenance we receive from Allah is reduced. We seek refuge to Allah, for there is no power or authority except with Allah. Dear brothers and sister where do we fit from what the messenger ppbu said: {The right of a Muslim upon another Muslim are six: 1- if they meet he is to greet him. 2- if he invites you then you are to respond or attend. 3- if he asks your advice then give advice. 4- if he sneezes then bless him. 5 – if he gets sick then visit him. 6- if he dies then go in his funeral}. Where does this fit with those who only greet their brothers as and when they feel like it. They only greet those who have big status or important. The messenger ppbu said: {if one of you meets his brother then do greet him}. This makes it compulsory to start the greeting. Yet one of the scholars (Ebn Abd-albur) reported that starting the greeting is recommended but responding with a greeting back is compulsory. Ammar said: There are three things if one person possesses them then he would processes all faith: 1- being just and unbiased to oneself. 2-offering and giving peace and greetings to the world (all people). 3-Spending and donating when one has the means. What big words that contain goodness within them. Remember dear brother that Peace is of Allah’s names. So when the Islamic greeting is given: “Assalam Alaikum” “Peace be with you” means you are in the protection of Allah.

I say what you hear and I ask forgiveness of all sins for me and you and for all Muslims from the Almighty. You too repent to Allah and ask for His forgiveness. He is the most Forgiving the most Merciful.
